Shyanne Mckellar

Founder of Bindarray: I am a proud Gumbaynggirr, Wangkumara, and Yuin woman, and a devoted mother to Kalari. My cultural roots run deep, with my mother’s maiden name being Foley and my father’s McKellar. From a young age, I’ve held a strong, lifelong connection to my culture.

My journey began with traditional Aboriginal dance at the age of six, always feeling a pull towards my heritage. Between the ages of 13 and 15, I danced with groups such as Jannawi and participated in community dance events like modern-day corroborees, including Yabun. Immersing myself in culture, I was called to learn the art of weaving and worked with the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council as a ranger. There, I deepened my knowledge of native plants and natural resources that my ancestors used to create tools, weapons, and traditional foods and medicines.

My hunger for cultural knowledge and connection to our old ways has guided me, instilling strong morals and a passion to educate and inspire multicultural Australians. I aim to nurture a sense of identity and connection in the next generation of proud Indigenous children.

My cultural journey, rooted in childhood, continues to evolve alongside my learning. There is something truly remarkable about the wisdom I’ve gained and my enduring thirst to discover more.
